Take Art Classes Where Art Lives

Adult Art Classes Available at The Studios at SAM

Sarasota Fla, (Jan. 11, 2024) – The leading destination to view contemporary art in Sarasota is also the leading destination for making art… for adults. Registration for classes at Sarasota Art Museum of Ringling College of Art and Design is now open.

The Studios at SAM offer a wide variety of classes and workshops, in everything from introduction to painting and wheel-thrown ceramics, at all levels (beginner to advanced) and on weekends, weeknights, and weekdays. The winter season features favorites such as Anatomy for Artists and Developing Your Artistic Vision of Sarasota Through Photography, plus new classes including Nature Photography: Birds of Florida and Painting 101: Acrylic.

The Studios at SAM adult art classes range in skill level from beginner to intermediate to advanced, bringing best-in-class instruction for everyone, from those interested in discovering the joys of drawing and painting, to experienced artists who wish to explore advanced techniques in an open studio environment. Joining an art class can have innumerable benefits from increasing one’s spatial awareness to improving health. Studies have shown that physical and mental health are improved when people draw for set periods of time. In a similar way to meditation, blood pressure drops, tension fades away, and it’s fun!

Housed in dedicated classroom space located on the Museum campus, the old Sarasota High School building, The Studios at SAM are located at 1001 South Tamiami Trail. Adults can sign up for individual sessions, or they can take multi-week classes with four or six sessions.

“Joining an art class is a great way to meet new people with shared interests. Making time to socialize with new friends doing an activity you love can have countless benefits for your long-term mental health and happiness and can give you the much-needed emotional lift you need at the end of a long day,” said Virginia Shearer, the Museum’s executive director.

Adult art classes represent yet another opportunity for the local community to share in Ringling College of Art and Design’s diverse cultural resources. Classes provide unique learning opportunities with world-class art instructors in a welcoming, informal setting, all at an affordable price: single classes start at $63 per session for Museum Members/$70 per session for Not-Yet Members; four-session classes start at $180 for Museum Members/$200 for Not-Yet Members; and six-session classes start at $270 for Museum Members/$300 for Not-Yet Members. For most classes, including ceramics, the cost of supplies are included.

“When you start learning to make art, you can’t help but look at famous artists’ work in galleries and museums in a different way, and your appreciation for art will grow,” added Shearer. “Art classes are an ideal gift for people who value culturally rich experiences and are looking for activities that will elevate their everyday.”
