Sarasota Art Museum Creates Multimedia Educational Resources Through IMLS Grant
New INSIDE OUT: Educator and Student Resources K-12 series features engaging videos and extensive educator guides designed to teach multiple subjects through the study of contemporary art
SARASOTA, Fla. (Sept. 18, 2023) – Sarasota Art Museum of Ringling College of Art and Design is proud to launch an engaging educational resource for teachers and students, made possible in part by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). The new resource, titled INSIDE OUT: Educator and Student Resources K-12, features a series of engaging videos and extensive educator guides designed to teach multiple subjects through the study of contemporary art.
The INSIDE OUT: Educator and Student Resources K-12 series includes:
- Videos exploring the temporary exhibitions on view at Sarasota Art Museum, along with its historic building and semi-permanent art installations.
- Educator guides focused on subjects such as science, mathematics, English language arts, and social studies. Each guide includes information about the Museum, discussion questions, activities, artist biographies, and vocabulary developed specifically for grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12.
These tools are designed to help foster students’ curiosity in art and participation while enriching their visual literacy.
“As a teaching museum, Sarasota Art Museum was built to create educational opportunities for our community by showcasing living artists and contemporary art,” said Virginia Shearer, executive director of Sarasota Art Museum. “Through the INSIDE OUT series and resources, educators and students have an engaging opportunity to explore the art of our time in ways that are connected to their classroom curriculum. We are grateful to the IMLS for making our development of this educational resource possible.”
Sarasota Art Museum’s Learning and Engagement Department worked closely with educators, school teachers, art teachers, art integration specialists, and Sarasota County School specialists to ensure that INSIDE OUT: Educator and Student Resources K-12 directly supports Florida educational standards and classroom lesson plans. Teachers and students can use these resources in their classrooms, at home, and as an interactive component of a visit to the Museum.
“It is so exciting to have these wonderful new resources available to our teachers and students,” said Angela Harvitgsen, Sarasota County Schools fine arts program specialist. “The connections made from art and architecture to other content areas bring everything together for students and make contemporary art come alive. Our teachers are eager to delve into these rich resources with their students!”
“These lesson plans and videos ensure that my students are gaining the knowledge needed to think creatively,” said Brooks Tracey, Sarasota Middle School art teacher. “We can’t wait to visit the Museum in person!”
INSIDE OUT: Educator and Student Resources K-12’s creation was led by Teaching Artist and Sarasota Art Museum’s Community Catalyst Connie Cuadrado in joyful collaboration with all departments of the Museum, engaged visitors, guest educator presenters, kids, and Waevy Productions.
Sarasota Art Museum is Ringling College of Art and Design’s dynamic laboratory for the exploration and advancement of contemporary art. As Sarasota’s only museum solely focused on contemporary artists and their work, Sarasota Art Museum showcases art that is happening now.
