Join Lacie Barbour, Associate Curator of Exhibitions for Sarasota Art Museum, in a discussion about the exhibition Larry Fink / Martha Posner: Flesh and Bone.

About Lacie Barbour

Lacie Barbour, Associate Curator of Exhibitions at Sarasota Art Museum, is an emerging museum professional with an interest in diversity, inclusion, and community in the contemporary art world. She participated in a curatorial internship at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, where she established an ongoing exhibition series aimed at highlighting marginalized communities within the Historic Circus Museum archives. She joined the team at Sarasota Art Museum as a curatorial assistant in 2022 and has since contributed to the curation and management of exhibitions by a variety of regional, national, and global artists. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Art History from Southeastern Louisiana University and a Master of Arts in Museum and Cultural Heritage Studies from Florida State University.

About Virginia Shearer

Virginia Shearer joined the Sarasota Art Museum of Ringling College of Art and Design in August 2021. As executive director, she leads an ever-growing expansion of exhibitions, programming, and community engagement activities. She has devoted her 26 years of museum leadership to catalyzing meaningful connections with art and artists, for people of all ages, backgrounds, and experience with the arts. At Sarasota Art Museum, she leverages the talents of national and international artists and curators, and exhibition and education teams, to continue this work creating an innovative array of programming for all visitors – students, families, and lifelong learners, from the arts-curious to arts-lovers. Prior to Sarasota Art Museum, Shearer worked at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia, where she served as the Eleanor McDonald Storza director of education and as associate director of education. Shearer participated in the Getty Museum Leadership Institute at CGU in 2014 and the Getty’s Next Gen Executive Leadership Program in 2012. Shearer holds a Bachelor of Arts in Humanities from Florida State University and a Master of Arts in Teaching in Museum Education from The George Washington University.

About Marina Shaltout

Shaltout received her MFA from the University of Arizona and her BFA from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has completed residencies at Arte Ventura in Aracena, Spain, the Creative Centre in Stodvarfjordur, Iceland and at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces. She has exhibited work nationally and internationally in venues such as the Royal Photographic Society in Bristol, Alte Munze in Berlin, the Cinematograph in Innsbruck Austria, the Living National Treasure Museum in Tokyo, the Czong Institute in Gimpo, South Korea, the Museum of Contemporary Art Tucson, the Red Room in Baltimore, and the Billboard Creative exhibition in Los Angeles. She currently teaches in Fine Arts and Visual Studies at Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, FL.

Join Thomas Carabasi, Department Head of Photography and Imaging at Ringling College of Art and Design, in a discussion about the exhibition Larry Fink / Martha Posner: Flesh and Bone.

About Thomas Carabasi

Thomas Carabasi is a native of Philadelphia and is currently the Department Head of Photography and Imaging at Ringling College of Art and Design. He has over 40 years of professional experience as a photographer, educator and musician and his work has been exhibited widely both nationally and internationally. He is currently represented in the collections of The Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Center for Creative Photography, The John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art, Princeton University Art Museum and the Museo Ken Damy in Milan, Italy. He is also the recipient of grants from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and the Australian Council of the Arts. Carabasi is an active drummer and band leader in the Tampa Bay/Sarasota area and has performed and recorded with many of the area’s top jazz artists.

Join Joe Fig, Ringling College of Art and Design Fine Arts Department Head and practicing artist, in a discussion about his exhibition Joe Fig: Contemplating Vermeer.

About Joe Fig

Joe Fig is an artist known for work that explores the creative process, and the spaces where art is made and contemplated. His diverse body of work encompasses painting, sculpture, photography and drawing, in which he examines the role of the artist, the creative process, and the self-made universe of the Artist’s studio. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. He is the author of the acclaimed books Inside the Painter’s Studio and Inside the Artist’s Studio, which share an intimate view inside the studios of today’s leading artists. His work can be found in numerous museums and leading private collections including JP Morgan Chase, Fogg Art Museum, Dayton Art Institute, Chazen Museum of Art, Parrish Art Museum, Norton Museum of Art, The New Museum of Contemporary Art and the Toledo Museum of Art among others. His work has been featured in The New York TimesBoston GlobeArtforumArt in America, and ArtNews as well as several international magazines. Joe Fig is the Department Chair of both Fine Arts and Visual Studies at Ringling College of Art & Design in Sarasota, FL. He earned his BFA and MFA from the School of Visual Arts, New York.  He is represented by Cristin Tierney Gallery in New York.

Join Jamie DeRuyter, Department Head of the Entertainment Design program at Ringling College of Art and Design, in a discussion about the exhibition Future Now: Virtual Sneakers to Cutting-Edge Kicks.

About Jamie DeRuyter

Jamie DeRuyter earned a BFA in Computer Animation from Ringling College of Art and Design. Jamie joined Ringling College as faculty in 2002 and has maintained an active professional practice creating animation and visual effects for multiple experiences and theme park rides including The Radio City Christmas Spectacular, Twister Ride It Out, Revenge of The Mummy, Dueling Dragons, The Simpsons and Antarctica: Empire Of The Penguin. He has created animation and visual effects for several game titles including Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Trilogy, the award winning remake of Shadow of the Colossus, and Demon’s Souls.

Now as Department Head, Jamie has led the development of our newest major at Ringling College. Entertainment Design teaches students to conceive, visualize, and realize innovative design solutions that bring immersive entertainment experiences to life.  He is currently designing exhibits for the museum industry including: The Glass Barn, The International Spy Museum and The Frost Science Center.
