The internship program begins with a six-week summer intensive that includes guest speakers and hands-on experiences learning about the museum field, careers, and programs. Throughout the school year, Teen Arts Council members will continue to assist in developing and implementing programming for teens, youths, and families. While part of the Teen Arts Council program, members meet with Sarasota Art Museum staff, arts professionals, and other teens.

“Sarasota Art Museum is dedicated to making art accessible for all, and SAM TAC is a powerful opportunity to further that goal,” said Virginia Shearer, executive director of Sarasota Art Museum. “Through Flora Major’s leadership and vision, SAM TAC continues to grow while providing teens a place to explore and develop their own connection to art through meaningful, relevant, and equitable experiences.”

The 2023-2024 SAM TAC class members hail from several schools throughout our region, including Booker High School, Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School, Florida Virtual School, Lakewood Ranch High School, Manatee High School, Manatee School for the Arts, The Out-of-Door Academy, Riverview High School, and Suncoast Technical College.

Teen Arts Council is a year-round commitment and a paid position. Also known as the Kutya Major Sarasota Art Museum Internship Program, SAM TAC is generously supported by the Kutya Major Foundation and Flora Major, one of Sarasota Art Museum’s founders.

“Ensuring our youth and future artists have access to experiential learning opportunities can make a significant difference in their growth and appreciation of the arts,” said Flora Major. “It is truly fulfilling to witness SAM TAC continuing to inspire and educate more teens throughout our region.”

Teen Arts Council members have an interest in learning about art and the workings of a museum and serving as ambassadors for Sarasota Art Museum. Rising high school juniors and seniors are eligible to apply for next year’s class. Applicants must be enrolled full-time in high school for the 2024-2025 school year.
