Enter the Dragon: Lino Tagliapietra in Context
While other names like Dale Chihuly and Dante Marioni may be slightly better known in the USA, no single figure had a greater impact on the art glass movement than Lino Tagliapietra. He is also widely acknowledged to be the most skilled artist of his era to work in the medium. In this talk, Glenn Adamson – historian, curator, and editor of a recent book on Tagliapietra- will relate the fascinating story of this artisan-turned-artist: his background in Murano, the famed glass-making island near Venice; his decision to come to America, and share his secret knowledge with the emerging community there; his collaborations with Chihuly and Marioni; and the genesis of his late, great work, among the most beautiful and technically accomplished glass artworks ever created. Throughout, Dr. Adamson will put Tagliapietra in context, comparing his work to that of other artists in the Basch collection (including Stanislav Libenský and Jaroslava Brychtová, Laura de Santillana, and Preston Singletary) and showing how he was shaped by the art, craft and design worlds of Italy, the USA and beyond.
Glenn Adamson is a curator, writer and historian based in New York. He has previously been Director of the Museum of Arts and Design and Head of Research at the V&A. Dr. Adamson’s publications include Thinking Through Craft (2007); The Craft Reader (2010); Postmodernism: Style and Subversion (2011, with Jane Pavitt); The Invention of Craft (2013); Art in the Making (2016, with Julia Bryan-Wilson); Fewer Better Things: The Hidden Wisdom of Objects (2018); Objects: USA 2020; and Craft: An American History (2021). His next book, A Century of Tomorrows, will be published by Bloomsbury in 2024.
Dr. Adamson is Artistic Director for Design Doha, a new biennial festival for Qatar (forthcoming in 2024), editor of Material Intelligence, a quarterly online journal published by the Chipstone Foundation, and curator-at-large for LongHouse Reserve.
His current curatorial projects include Mirror Mirror: Reflections on Design at Chatsworth (2023), Worlds Within: The Art of Toshiko Takaezu at the Isamu Noguchi Museum (forthcoming in 2024, and touring thereafter), and Ground/work 2 at the Clark Art Institute (forthcoming in 2025).
