International Award-Winning Musical Artists Featured in Salon-Style Series Concerts

New program kicks off Nov. 5 with performances by Max Tan and TianYi Li

SARASOTA, Fla. (Oct. 26, 2022) – A new world-class classical music program, “Listen Hear” makes its debut at Sarasota Art Museum of Ringling College on Nov. 5. Curated by concert violinist Max Tan, “Listen Hear” is a salon-style event including a short, classical music program, insights from the artists, and conversation in an intimate setting.

“Listen Hear” presents a roster of diverse music and musicians on Saturdays at 2 pm in the Thomas McGuire Hall at Sarasota Art Museum. Performances are designed to introduce a wide range of Classical repertoire from Baroque to Contemporary composers, and will include:
  • Nov. 5, 2022—Max Tan (violin) and TianYi Li (piano)
  • Dec. 3, 2022—Max Tan (violin) and Stephanie Tang (piano)
  • Dec. 17, 2022—Timothy Chooi (violin) and ChangYong Shin (piano)
  • Jan. 28, 2023—Michelle Ross (violin, composition)
  • April 15, 2023—Max Tan (viola), Sam Boutris (clarinet), and Chelsea Wang (piano)

“We’re looking forward to presenting Listen Hear, a series of afternoon concerts featuring a new generation of classical musicians,” said Virginia Shearer, executive director of Sarasota Art Museum. “At Sarasota Art Museum, we believe in the intersections among all artistic disciplines, and we are especially dedicated to integrating many different approaches to music, catering to audiences across styles and periods, from classical to jazz, from performance to interactive experiences.”

“I’m extremely excited for the launch of this new series and partnership with the Sarasota Art Museum,” said Tan. “Modeled after the nineteenth-century music salon, I hope it is a portal through which audiences gathered can enjoy not only the musical performances but also the insights into the music-making process.”

Museum Member tickets are $40 and Not-Yet Member tickets are $55. Seating is limited; advance ticket purchase with pre-event registration is recommended.

The Listen Hear series kicks off with Max Tan and TianYi Li who will perform a historical arrangement of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, published in 1886, and a new arrangement of Beethoven’s Leonore Overture arranged for solo piano by Juilliard doctoral candidate TianYi Li, and explore how instrumentation and arranging can affect our experience of musical works.

The Listen Hear series continues with Stephanie Tang and Max Tan exploring Brahms’ Violin Sonata No. 2 in A Major, perhaps the most loving of his three violin sonatas. Using historical recordings from before the Second World War, the artists discuss time versus timing, and will share insights on how our understanding of these concepts has changed throughout the last century.

Listen Hear returns again with Timothy Chooi and ChangYong Shin presenting a short program of works inspired by folk music throughout Europe. Centered on Edvard Grieg’s Violin Sonata No. 3, the artists will also present works by Dvorak, Szymanowski, and Sarasate, sharing how folk music in the lives of each composer informs their understanding and performance.

The Listen Hear series returns to explore improvised music, a mysterious intersection of creation and interpretation. Michelle Ross, an alumna of the Perlman Music Program, discusses the creative process, including her library of personal voice memos and galleries of her own manuscripts. In this recreation of her workspace, the salon features premieres of new works that Ross will improvise for all to enjoy.

April 15: Max Tan, Sam Boutris, and Chelsea Wang: Textures and Timbres
Tan, Boutris, and Wang will perform works by Mozart, Brahms, Bruch, and other gems of the chamber music repertoire revolving around the viola and clarinet. Elements of the instruments’ singing, breathing, and speaking characteristics will be compared as the artists discuss their interplay—and exchangeability—in classical music.

The concerts will be held in Thomas McGuire Hall; $40 for Members and $55 for Not-Yet Members; seating is limited; advance ticket purchase with pre-event registration is recommended.
